Great post NFO. USS Ranger Battle Group Echo in both 89 and 91... with 8,000 dudes in Olongapo (before women allowed aboard ship)... just prior to Mt Pinatubo cooking off. One of the coolest hops in the Viking we did while transiting that area was a "radar-run-in" and mark-on-top of the Philippine nuclear power plant. Did a 400 knot carrier break right over the top of it.

OldSENSO with old memories.

Last May, we got to visit the Cubi Point Bar that's been completely re-built inside the National Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola, and actually serves beer. Thousands of stickers and plaques. A must visit for all NAVAIR junkies. Going again later this month. Bringing more stickers this time.

In regards to drunken donkeys, ancient Greek philosopher Chrysippus of Soli actually died of laughter at a wedding reception he attended. The cause of the fatal giggle fit was watching a donkey get so drunk eating fermented figs it couldn't stand up straight.

First time in Olongapo City was 1970. Was stationed on CLG-5 out of Yokosuka, Japan. O-City was a regular stop as we were either shelling I Corps and the DMZ or at NSAR/Piraz Station in the Tonkin Gulf every month I was aboard for 19 months. "Our" bars were The Little Brown Jug on Rizal Ave. and its sister bar about 2 blocks up Gordon Ave on the left. Always ate at Kongs, when we wanted something besides street food. But that meat-onna-stick and fresh fruit was hard to beat. The best beer was ice cold, frosty San Miguel..."24 flavors in every case". After a 51 week conversion training from Radarman to Electronics Warfare Technician I deployed again on CVA-19 in 1973. O-City, of course. Deployed there again in 1975 aboard FF-1071, just in time for Operation Frequent Wind. We escorted the SVN Navy to Subic Bay and did other janitorial work as South Vietnam fell in spite our treaty obligations. Last time in Olongapo was 1983 while serving aboard FFG-9. It was a grand town. Friendliest R&R port in WestPac and best repair facility for deployed ships.
