Yup. And because of the exclusivity of airdale and submarine bars, and the ethnic bars that were pretty much no-go zones unless you had a friend who invited you, surface sailors were relegated to those condign pits of Hell that were Regular Navy dive bars. Thank you for that. As a young single sailor with a fist-full of cash fresh from weeks at sea, those places were home, sweet home for we Deck Group, Weps & Snipe Types. The Supply and admin wienies...not so much. They were more inclined to go for the red Kool-Aid and ginger snaps at the Christian Science Reading Room. My first "WestPac" lasted 2 years...E-6, $10K VRB, $75 ProPay, Hostile Fire pay, tax-free, 21 years old. I came home looking like a cadaver. What a great job. What a great life. Good friends, good times, good eats, cold beer, a mission, a purpose. I can't imagine another career that would have such great opportunities for a 17 year old, such great mentoring, challenges and responsibilities. The memories. The decent pension. I'd do it again. But I might need a few waivers now.
