All that this increased police presence in DC, for as long as it lasts, will do is drive the criminals out into VA and MD. Like rats and mice when you fumigate a house, you will get a few of the stupid ones who didn't leave, the others will return as soon as the threat is gone. back to business as usual.
Lived and worked in MD in the late 80's early '90's. MD wasn't bad, but yeah, D.C. only in the daytime, and usually best to park further out and take the subway at that time if you wanted to see the monuments. But, did it both ways. It was a lot cleaner over all then.
LBJ was an asshole. People weren't supposed to live in DC.
