I'd love to see an audit of Flag Officer, and civilian GM, pay. Along with the perks given them. The DoD is "fat" with those folks and could save a lot by letting the majority of them go. Or assigning O-6s in many of their roles. 🤷♂️ Then they could look at the staff that Flag Officers and civilian GM types surround themselves with. Assign them to more important roles or fire them. How much funding for Enlisted pay could they find from just that?
Yep. Even back then I had two E-6s sharing a three bedroom house with wives and four kids to be able to live in something 'decent', and both were on food stamps.
I had some short days, but not that bad. Maybe there needs to be more money counselling/education? Learning things like Velocity Banking, budgeting, stuff like that.

It makes my heart hurt. It wasn't amazing when I was in, but it was a lot better.
