Personally, I don't think the Olympics were ever about individual excellence. Frankly, all sports competitions are, and will be, victims of foul judging/refereeing.
I saw it during the 2004 or 2005 Super Bowl, when the rotten officiating gave the game to Pittsburgh over Seattle.
I used to make a joke about this very sort of thing: Judge from U.S. 10, Great Britain 10, Japan 10, Australia 10, Rwanda 10, Germany 10, Romania 1.5. 🙂 Might be time to change the rules again to realign the meaning of "fairness".
My understanding is there's greater difference between the French Judge and ALL the judges than between the American Judge and ALL the judges, consistent across all the skaters.

Second, admitting to personal failings in character and some hardwired biases owing more to nurture than nature, I cannot, will not get worked up about anyone getting short shrift for flouncing around on ice seeking attention that just ain't acoming, Bucko. Not from this former sailor who wore the uniform proudly. No Sir. The Olympics is nothing but a "get the US" show. The French judge is a piece of crap, those that defended him are made of the same stuff, and the whole program is a useless exercise in international feel-good for the rest of the world. Like always, the US is dumped on (until they need us to pull their asses out of another fire), and we should learn. Boycott the Olympics, withdraw from all the international organizations that expect us to be the adult in a room full of children, and be the United States, not some warm, fuzzy security blanket.
